Life with Braces in Meridian, ID
Your Guide to a Smooth, Successful Smile Journey
Getting braces doesn’t mean giving up everything you love, it just means learning a few smart habits. At Idaho’s Dentist, Dr. Gneiting and our team are here to guide you through every step of life with braces so you can stay comfortable, on track, and excited about your results.
What Can You Eat with Braces?
Good news: You can still enjoy delicious meals while protecting your brackets and wires. Here’s how:
Braces-Friendly Foods:
· Yogurt
· Smoothies
· Pasta
· Mashed potatoes
· Steamed veggies
· Tender meats
These soft options are easy to chew and won’t damage your orthodontic appliances.
Foods to Avoid:
· Popcorn
· Nuts
· Caramel & sticky candy
· Hard candies
· Gum
· Crunchy or chewy bread crusts
· Whole apples (cut them into slices!)
These items can break brackets, bend wires, and delay treatment, so it's best to steer clear.
Brushing and Flossing with Braces
With braces, oral hygiene is mission critical. Clean teeth equal faster, healthier results.
Brushing Tips:
· Brush after every meal with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
· Angle the brush at 45° to clean around brackets and wires
· Spend at least two full minutes brushing
· Don’t forget your tongue and gumline
Flossing Tips:
· Use a floss threader or water flosser to reach between wires
· Floss once daily to remove plaque and food particles
· Rinse with fluoride mouthwash to keep enamel strong and breath fresh
We’ll show you all the tips and tools at your appointments to make it easy and effective.
Dealing with Discomfort
Some soreness after getting braces or following adjustments is totally normal, it just means your teeth are doing their job.
· Mild discomfort? Try soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief like Tylenol or ibuprofen.
· Poking wire or loose bracket? Call us right away. You can use orthodontic wax or gently tuck a wire with a clean cotton swab until your appointment.
· Swelling or signs of infection? If your orthodontist isn’t available, we’re here to help with urgent care.
